Kansas City, KS (November 14, 2024) – A car-semitrailer collision on northbound Interstate 635, just south of the Kansas River, left a man with serious injuries on Wednesday morning, November 13, 2024. The crash was reported at approximately 8:13 a.m. and involved a 2022 International semitrailer and a 2005 Honda Accord.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the collision occurred when the semitrailer, merging onto I-635 from K-32 highway, shifted unexpectedly. The trailer crossed all lanes of traffic and struck the center median barrier wall. It then deflected to the right, hitting the Honda Accord before continuing to the outside barrier wall, where it came to a stop.
The driver of the Honda, 31-year-old Dinier I. Matute Funez of Kansas City, KS, sustained serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Authorities confirmed that Funez was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.
The driver of the semi, Roberta L. Brightwell, 53, of Gladstone, MO, was uninjured and was also confirmed to have been wearing her seat belt. Both drivers were the sole occupants of their vehicles.
The Kansas Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation into the incident to determine the circumstances leading to the semitrailer’s sudden movement across the roadway.
Semi-Truck Accidents in Kansas
Semi-truck accidents, like the one on I-635, are often severe due to the size and weight of these vehicles. When a semitrailer crosses multiple lanes of traffic, it increases the likelihood of significant collisions and injuries, as seen in this incident. Merging onto highways, especially during peak traffic hours, requires precise control and caution to prevent catastrophic events.
Highways in Kansas, including I-635, are vital for transporting goods and connecting communities, but their heavy use by both commercial and passenger vehicles presents safety challenges. Drivers sharing the road with large trucks are encouraged to maintain a safe distance and remain alert to sudden lane changes or movements.
For victims of semi-truck accidents, the recovery process can be overwhelming, involving medical treatment, loss of income, and vehicle repairs. Legal guidance can help victims understand their rights and secure compensation for their losses.
