Brookings, OR (November 12, 2024) – A tragic vehicle-pedestrian collision occurred early Sunday morning in Curry County, resulting in one fatality and prompting an arrest for the driver involved. The Oregon State Police (OSP) responded to the incident, which took place around 1:00 a.m. on Highway 101 near milepost 358.

According to OSP, 38-year-old James Lorin Tavel of Brookings was walking on the highway when he was struck by a Honda CRV driven by 34-year-old Tiffany Lyne Camp, also of Brookings. After hitting Tavel, Camp fled the scene of the crash. Authorities later located Camp, who was arrested in connection with the incident. The victim, Tavel, was declared deceased at the scene.

Camp and her passenger, 37-year-old Julia Pettigrew, were not injured in the crash. The highway was closed for approximately six hours during the investigation.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, and OSP is working with local law enforcement and emergency responders to determine the full circumstances of the incident.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of James Lorin Tavel, and we extend our thoughts to those impacted by this tragedy.

Vehicle-Pedestrian Accidents in Oregon
Vehicle-pedestrian collisions are a significant safety concern on Oregon’s highways, particularly on rural roads like Highway 101. These types of accidents often involve impaired or distracted driving, failure to yield, and poor visibility. The Oregon State Police continue to investigate the causes of such crashes to improve public safety and reduce the number of fatalities.

In this case, authorities remind drivers of their responsibility to remain at the scene of any accident and render aid as necessary. Fleeing the scene of a crash is a serious offense with severe legal consequences.

Highway 101, a major coastal route, can be particularly hazardous during nighttime driving, with limited lighting and unpredictable weather conditions. This incident highlights the importance of vigilance and safe driving practices, especially in rural and less populated areas.
