Wheeling Township, OH (November 13, 2024) – A fatal crash early Wednesday morning on State Route 9 in Belmont County claimed the life of one person and left another seriously injured. The Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) responded to the scene near milepost 20 at approximately 2 a.m.
Officials reported that a 2007 Chevy Silverado was traveling southbound on State Route 9 when it failed to negotiate a curve, veering off the left side of the roadway. The vehicle struck a guardrail and a tree before coming to a stop.
The driver, identified as 34-year-old Demario E. Smith of Cleveland, was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger, 35-year-old Lamier Bray, also of Cleveland, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to UPMC for medical treatment.
Multiple agencies, including the Cumberland Trail Fire Department, Belmont County Sheriff’s Office, Harrison County Sheriff’s Office, and St. Clairsville Police Department, assisted at the scene. The OSHP has launched an investigation into the crash and is utilizing a reconstruction unit to determine contributing factors.
