Bradenton, FL (November 12, 2024) – A tragic incident unfolded Sunday evening on State Road 70 when a 49-year-old Bradenton man was fatally struck by multiple vehicles while attempting to cross the roadway. The crash occurred at approximately 6:54 p.m., just West of 15th Street East in Manatee County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).

The pedestrian was attempting to cross the road from a grassy shoulder when he stepped into the path of an SUV driven by a 25-year-old woman from Manatee County. The SUV struck the man, throwing him into the westbound lanes of SR 70, where he was subsequently hit by a sedan and another SUV traveling behind the initial vehicle.

Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene, but the pedestrian was pronounced deceased. None of the drivers involved were reported injured. The FHP continues to investigate the circumstances of the crash, and no charges have been announced at this time.

Our deepest condolences are extended to the family and friends of the victim during this difficult time.

Pedestrian Accidents in Florida

Pedestrian fatalities are a pressing concern across Florida, which consistently ranks among the most dangerous states for pedestrians. High-speed roadways, limited crosswalks, and driver inattention all contribute to the frequency and severity of such incidents.

State Road 70, like many major thoroughfares, sees heavy traffic and poses significant risks for those crossing outside designated areas. Pedestrians are particularly vulnerable in collisions, with multiple-vehicle accidents compounding the severity of injuries.

Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) underscores that pedestrians account for a substantial portion of traffic fatalities nationwide. In Florida, factors such as poor visibility, impaired driving, and high-speed zones exacerbate these risks.

Public safety campaigns and infrastructure improvements aim to reduce these tragic outcomes. Pedestrians are urged to use marked crosswalks, remain vigilant, and avoid crossing busy roadways at night. Similarly, drivers must remain alert, reduce speeds in populated areas, and yield the right of way where appropriate.
