Union City, OH (November 12, 2024) – Two pedestrians were injured Saturday evening after being struck by a utility task vehicle (UTV) at the Union City Country Club. The incident occurred around 7:43 p.m. on November 10, prompting a swift response from local authorities and emergency services.
According to the Darke County Sheriff’s Office, Carolyn Stewart, 64, of Union City, Indiana, was operating the UTV when it struck the pedestrians while she was attempting to reverse the vehicle toward the clubhouse. The victims, a 77-year-old man, and a 69-year-old woman sustained varying injuries in the collision.
The male victim was treated at Wayne Healthcare and later released, while the female victim was transported to Miami Valley Hospital by Miami Valley MICU. Her current condition remains unknown. Adverse weather conditions prevented CareFlight and MedFlight helicopters from being utilized at the scene.
Stewart was arrested on charges of Aggravated Vehicular Assault and Operating a Vehicle Impaired (OVI). She was subsequently transported to the Darke County Sheriff’s Office jail as investigations into the incident continued.
Our thoughts are with those injured, and we wish them a full and speedy recovery.
UTV Accidents and Safety in Ohio
Utility task vehicles (UTVs) are increasingly used for both recreational and practical purposes, but they can pose significant safety risks if not operated responsibly. In Ohio, incidents involving UTVs often occur in recreational areas or private properties, as seen in this unfortunate case. Factors such as impaired driving, operator inexperience, and limited visibility can lead to serious injuries.
State laws emphasize the importance of safe UTV operation, particularly prohibiting impaired driving and requiring proper training for drivers. However, accidents involving UTVs are complex, often requiring extensive investigations to determine liability and ensure justice for injured parties.
Victims of UTV accidents should seek prompt medical attention and consult legal professionals to protect their rights and pursue compensation for damages.
