Lake Charles, LA (November 11, 2024) – A three-vehicle collision in Calcasieu Parish resulted in the death of a Lake Charles woman on Friday evening. Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to the crash, which occurred shortly before 5:00 p.m. on Nelson Road near the intersection of Plantation Drive.
According to the preliminary investigation, 60-year-old Donna Chimeno of Lake Charles was driving a 2019 Honda HR-V southbound on Nelson Road in the outside lane. A 2024 Jeep Cherokee was traveling in the same direction in the inside lane. For reasons that remain under investigation, the Honda moved into the Jeep’s path while switching lanes. The Jeep struck the rear of the Honda, propelling it across the centerline into the northbound inside lane of Nelson Road, where it collided head-on with a 2022 Ford delivery van.
Chimeno sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The drivers of the Jeep Cherokee and the Ford delivery van were reportedly uninjured.
Louisiana State Police continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash, including factors that led to the lane switch. No further details have been released at this time.
Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Donna Chimeno during this difficult time.
Multi-Vehicle Accidents in Louisiana
Multi-vehicle crashes, such as the incident on Nelson Road, are particularly dangerous due to the increased forces and complexities involved. These accidents often lead to severe injuries or fatalities and can leave victims and families grappling with significant emotional and financial burdens.
Lane-switching maneuvers are a frequent contributing factor in multi-vehicle crashes, as they can create sudden hazards for other drivers. Distractions, speed, and failure to check blind spots often exacerbate these situations. In this case, the chain reaction from the initial collision underscores the risks associated with heavy traffic areas and lane changes.
For victims and their families, navigating the aftermath of a fatal accident can be overwhelming. Louisiana law allows families to seek compensation for damages, including funeral costs, loss of income, and emotional suffering, but these cases often require thorough investigation and legal expertise.
To reduce such accidents, drivers must exercise caution when switching lanes, maintain safe following distances, and remain vigilant in high-traffic areas. Public awareness campaigns and enhanced roadway designs can also help improve safety and prevent collisions.
