Huntsville Twp, MN (November 11, 2024) – A two-vehicle collision involving a 1990 GMC Sierra and a 2024 Subaru Outback occurred at the intersection of HWY 2 and HWY 220 on Sunday afternoon. Emergency responders, including East Grand Forks Fire and Altru EMS, promptly arrived to assist the involved parties.

The crash happened at approximately 4:31 p.m. when the southbound GMC Sierra, driven by Vicente Gomez, 54, of San Antonio, TX, collided with an eastbound Subaru Outback driven by Linda Kay Novacek, 72, of East Grand Forks, MN. Road conditions were dry at the time of the incident.

Gomez sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Altru Hospital in North Dakota for medical care. His passenger, Dinora Rangel, 47, also of San Antonio, TX, reported injuries but did not seek immediate medical attention. Both were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, though alcohol use was confirmed for Gomez.

Novacek, the driver of the Subaru Outback, was also evaluated for non-life-threatening injuries but did not require hospitalization. Her vehicle’s airbags deployed during the crash, and she was confirmed to have been sober and wearing a seatbelt.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an investigation to determine the circumstances leading up to the collision. The intersection remains a known area for high traffic, underscoring the importance of vigilance while driving.

Our thoughts go out to everyone affected by this accident, and we hope for their swift recovery.

Car Accidents in Minnesota

Minnesota sees a significant number of car accidents each year, with intersections being common hotspots for collisions. The state emphasizes road safety campaigns to reduce accidents caused by impaired driving, distractions, and failure to yield at intersections.

Collisions like the one at HWY 2 and HWY 220 highlight the risks of alcohol impairment and the need for sober driving. According to recent reports, alcohol-related crashes contribute to nearly 20% of all vehicular accidents in the state. Additionally, intersections often require drivers to manage complex traffic patterns, which can lead to confusion and accidents, especially in high-speed zones.

If you or someone you know has been injured in an accident, it is critical to seek both medical care and legal guidance. Understanding your rights and responsibilities after an accident can help protect your health and any claims for compensation.
