Springfield, OH (November 9, 2024) – Officer Terry Hopewell of the Springfield Division of Police sustained serious injuries in a two-vehicle crash involving a police cruiser Thursday night. The incident occurred around 9:30 PM on Selma Rd near York Street on Springfield’s southeast side.
The crash unfolded as Officer Hopewell, 36, was traveling southeast on Selma Rd in a 2023 Ford Explorer with lights and sirens activated. While attempting to overtake a 2007 Chevrolet Impala also headed southeast, the driver of the Impala reportedly failed to pull to the right and stop for the approaching emergency vehicle. As Officer Hopewell attempted to pass, the driver of the Impala made a left turn onto York Street, leading to a collision.
Officer Hopewell was seriously injured and transported to Springfield Regional Medical Center for treatment. A 24-year-old passenger in the cruiser sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was also taken to the same hospital.
The driver of the Impala fled the scene on foot, and authorities are actively investigating the incident. The Springfield Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is handling the case, and additional details about the crash and the emergency call to which Officer Hopewell was responding remain undisclosed.
Emergency Vehicle Safety in Ohio
Accidents involving emergency vehicles highlight the need for drivers to remain vigilant and adhere to Ohio’s “Move Over” laws. Drivers are required to yield to emergency vehicles by pulling to the right and stopping when lights and sirens are activated. Failure to do so increases the risk of severe crashes, particularly during high-speed responses.
This tragic incident underscores the risks law enforcement officers face while performing their duties. Community awareness and adherence to traffic laws are essential to reducing these dangers.
