Newton, IA (October 30, 2024) – A serious motorcycle accident occurred on October 27, 2024, at approximately 5:05 PM at the intersection of 1st Avenue East and E 17th Street. The incident involved three vehicles and resulted in injuries.
According to preliminary reports, a 2006 Suzuki GSC-R1000 motorcycle, operated by 23-year-old Harley M.S. Howe was traveling eastbound on 1st Avenue E when it collided with a 2022 Cadillac CT4 driven by 40-year-old Ryan J. Smith, also traveling eastbound. A 2023 Ford Explorer, driven by 67-year-old Randall W. Gunsaulus, was crossing 1st Avenue E from a business drive and turned west, leading to the collision.
In an attempt to avoid the collision, both the Cadillac and the motorcycle took evasive actions, resulting in the motorcycle striking the Explorer. Unfortunately, Harley M.S. Howe was thrown from the motorcycle upon impact, as he was not wearing a helmet at the time. He was transported to Mercy Des Moines via Mercy One Air Med for treatment of his injuries, which were reported as serious but non-life-threatening.
The investigation into the accident is ongoing, with Officer Matt Papin and Trooper Nemmers from the Newton Police Department overseeing the case.
