Washington, LA (October 29, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred early Monday morning, just before 4:00 a.m., when Louisiana State Police began investigating a single-vehicle fatality crash on Interstate 49 near the I-49 Rest Area in St. Landry Parish. The incident claimed the life of 46-year-old Markis Williams from Sterlington.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Williams was driving a 2006 GMC Sierra southbound on I-49 when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle veered off the roadway to the left. Despite his efforts to regain control, the GMC entered the grass median and overturned. Unfortunately, Williams was unrestrained at the time of the crash and was ejected from the vehicle, sustaining fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. Routine toxicology samples were collected for analysis as part of the ongoing investigation.
