Phoenix, AZ (October 29, 2024) – A tragic three-car crash occurred on October 28, resulting in the death of a 44-year-old man and injuries to three others. The incident took place around 4 p.m. near the intersection of 40th Street and Cactus Road, involving two passenger vehicles and a Waste Management garbage truck.
According to the Phoenix Fire Department, one of the drivers had to be extricated from their vehicle. The man who lost his life in the crash has been identified as John McLaughlin. Emergency responders transported three other individuals to the hospital, including a man and a child who are currently in critical condition, while another man is reported to be in stable condition.
Preliminary investigations by the Phoenix Police Department suggest that McLaughlin was driving the garbage truck northbound on 40th Street when, for reasons yet to be determined, he veered into the southbound lanes and ran a red light at Cholla Street. Shortly after crossing Cholla Street, the garbage truck collided with a small SUV traveling southbound, which was occupied by an adult male and a juvenile male. The truck continued its path northward until it struck another Waste Management truck, which was also occupied by an adult male, before coming to a stop. The impact caused the smaller SUV to veer off the road and crash into a nearby wall.
