Victoria, TX (October 26, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred early Friday morning on US Highway 77 north of Victoria, resulting in the death of a 25-year-old woman identified as Jazlyn Martinez. The incident was reported to law enforcement at approximately 6:50 a.m. and involved multiple vehicles.
Preliminary investigations revealed that a vehicle carrying a man, woman, and child had stalled on the highway while traveling southbound. The stalled vehicle had no lights, and visibility was severely limited to less than 700 feet (1/8 mile) due to heavy fog. In an attempt to move the vehicle, the man exited the car and tried to push it across the road.
Unfortunately, a white pickup truck, driven by an off-duty deputy from the Victoria County Sheriff’s Office, was unable to see the stalled vehicle in time and struck it. Tragically, Jazlyn Martinez, the woman in the stalled car, was pronounced dead at the scene. Fortunately, the man and child in the vehicle were not injured.
The deputy was transported to a local hospital with incapacitating injuries, and authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident. Following the initial collision, a second crash occurred approximately 1,000 feet behind the fatal wreck around 7:45 a.m., but no injuries were reported from that incident.
Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Jazlyn Martinez during this incredibly difficult time.
