Phoenix, AZ (October 25, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred early Friday morning on Interstate 10 in west Phoenix, resulting in the death of a pedestrian. At approximately 3:20 a.m., the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) received multiple reports of an individual walking on the westbound lanes of I-10 near 27th Avenue, crossing over the median.
According to preliminary investigations, the pedestrian was later seen walking in the eastbound HOV lane when he was struck by a Hyundai SUV. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and is cooperating with authorities. Initial reports indicate that impairment is not believed to be a factor in this incident.
The pedestrian sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Unfortunately, DPS Sergeant Eric Andrews confirmed later that the individual succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical care.

In response to the accident, the eastbound lanes of I-10 were closed at “The Stack,” the interchange with I-17, causing significant traffic delays. All eastbound traffic was diverted to exit onto I-17 northbound. Authorities began reopening the freeway around 5:45 a.m., but traffic remained backed up for several miles heading into downtown Phoenix during the closure.
