Grays Harbor County, WA (October 24, 2024) – A two-vehicle accident occurred on Tuesday afternoon, resulting in injuries to three individuals and the temporary closure of U.S. Highway 12. At approximately 1:43 p.m., the Washington State Patrol reported the incident at the intersection of Highway 12, Keys Road, and 4th Street, located west of Elma.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of a blue Hyundai hatchback was attempting to turn left from U.S. Highway 12 onto northbound 4th Street when it collided with a westbound white Kia sedan. The impact caused the hatchback to come to rest on the westbound shoulder, while the Kia blocked both westbound lanes of traffic.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, and a helicopter was dispatched to transport the driver of the Hyundai, a 27-year-old man from Elma, to St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma for treatment. Additionally, a 32-year-old woman from Lacey, who was a passenger in the hatchback, was taken to Summit Pacific Medical Center in Elma. The driver of the Kia, a 55-year-old woman from Aberdeen, was also transported to the same hospital. Fortunately, no other individuals were involved in the collision.
The Washington State Patrol is investigating the accident and believes that the driver of the hatchback failed to yield to the Kia, which may result in a second-degree negligent driving charge against him. Trooper Katherine Weatherwax reported on social media that the collision led to significant traffic disruptions, blocking the highway for approximately two hours while emergency services worked at the scene.
Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this incident, and we hope for a swift recovery for those injured.
