Baltimore County, MD (October 24, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred on Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 83, resulting in the loss of two lives and multiple injuries. At approximately 2 p.m., a pickup truck towing a trailer lost control while traveling southbound, crossing into oncoming traffic and colliding with a mobile crane, according to Maryland State Police.
The force of the impact set both vehicles ablaze, leading to a catastrophic scene that also involved three additional cars. The drivers of both the pickup truck and the mobile crane were pronounced dead at the scene, located near Parkton, roughly five miles south of the Pennsylvania state line. In addition, four other individuals sustained injuries and were transported by ambulance to a hospital in York, Pennsylvania, for medical treatment.
The accident prompted the closure of both lanes and shoulders of I-83 North at Exit 33 for MD Route 45, also known as York Road, around 2:15 p.m. This closure remained in effect until approximately 6:30 p.m., causing significant traffic delays in the area.
As investigators arrived on the scene around 5:30 p.m., they documented the aftermath of the crash. Eyewitnesses reported seeing two severely damaged SUVs on the right side of the northbound lanes. A black vehicle was found resting on a grassy incline between the freeway and the ramp, while a baby blue Subaru, with two crushed doors on the driver’s side, was missing a wheel, illustrating the severity of the collision.
The Baltimore County Fire Department dispatched hazmat crews to the scene, emphasizing the need for caution as they worked to manage the situation. Motorists were advised to expect “major delays” in the area as cleanup and investigation efforts continued.
