Kasota Township, MN (October 21, 2024) – A serious traffic accident occurred in Kasota Township on October 20, 2024, at approximately 12:36 p.m. The incident involved a collision between a motorcycle and a pickup truck at the intersection of MN Hwy 22 and LeSueur County Road 21.
According to reports, the 2010 Honda GL1800 motorcycle, operated by 52-year-old Michael Wayne Sandersfeld of Mankato, was traveling northbound on MN Hwy 22 when it collided with a 2019 GMC Sierra pickup truck, driven by 49-year-old James John Jakes from Montgomery, who was heading westbound on LeSueur CR 21. The impact occurred within the intersection, leading to significant injuries for the motorcyclist.
Emergency responders from Nicollet County Sheriff’s Office, LeSueur County Sheriff’s Office, Kasota Fire Department, and River’s Edge Ambulance were dispatched to the scene. Mr. Sandersfeld sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to River’s Edge Hospital in St. Peter for urgent medical care. Fortunately, the driver of the GMC Sierra did not suffer any injuries and refused medical treatment at the scene.
The road conditions at the time of the accident were reported to be dry, which is often a contributing factor in many traffic incidents. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is ongoing, and authorities are working to gather more information.
Our thoughts are with Mr. Sandersfeld and his family during this difficult time.
Motorcycle Accidents in Minnesota
Motorcycle accidents in Minnesota can often lead to severe injuries and life-altering consequences for those involved. Each year, numerous riders face the risks associated with motorcycle travel, including the potential for catastrophic injuries in the event of a collision. Statistics show that motorcycle riders are significantly more vulnerable than occupants of passenger vehicles. According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, motorcyclists are 28 times more likely to die in a crash than those in passenger vehicles. This stark reality highlights the importance of safety measures, including wearing helmets and protective gear, even though Minnesota law does not mandate helmet use for riders over the age of 18.
In the case of Mr. Sandersfeld, the absence of a helmet may have contributed to the severity of his injuries. Riders are encouraged to take all necessary precautions, including wearing a DOT-approved helmet, using protective clothing and gear, maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles, and being aware of road conditions and potential hazards.
