Rogers County, OK (October 20, 2024) – A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday morning, October 20, when a police pursuit led to a fatal car crash on Route 66, resulting in the death of a young woman. According to Sheriff Scott Walton of the Rogers County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO), the pursuit began when deputies were requested to assist in tracking a 17-year-old driving a stolen vehicle from Vinita, OK.
During the initial pursuit, a deputy clocked the speeding vehicle at over 100 miles per hour. However, this part of the chase was soon terminated. Despite this, law enforcement continued to patrol the area in search of the stolen car, which was eventually found crashed.
Shortly thereafter, authorities learned that the suspect had stolen a second vehicle, a black pickup truck. A deputy spotted this vehicle and initiated a second pursuit near Foyil, OK. During the chase, RCSO attempted to deploy stop sticks to halt the suspect’s progress. The first attempt failed when the suspect allegedly tried to run over the deputy. A second deployment of the stop sticks was successful, yet the suspect continued to flee.
The situation took a tragic turn when the suspect lost control while crossing over a railroad and collided with a car carrying a mother and daughter traveling north on Route 66. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) reported that the daughter, identified as Logan Harrel, age 23, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her mother, Kimberly Harrel, age 50, was airlifted to a Tulsa hospital and is currently in stable condition with internal injuries.
The 17-year-old suspect, from Rogersville, MO, was taken into custody without injuries. Sheriff Walton confirmed that the suspect would face charges, including vehicular homicide, although specific charges are still being determined. The OHP is conducting a thorough investigation into the crash, while the RCSO is handling the broader investigation.
Our thoughts are with the Harrel family during this incredibly difficult time.
