Gonzales, CA (October 20, 2024) – A tragic traffic accident occurred on Highway 101 in south Monterey County on Saturday, resulting in a fatality. The incident took place around 11:45 AM at the intersection with Gloria Road, involving five vehicles in total.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a 16-year-old male from Salinas was driving a 2021 Chevrolet 2500, which was hauling a trailer southbound on Highway 101. The Chevrolet 2500 collided with a Chevrolet Colorado in front of it, causing the Colorado to lose control and roll over. Unfortunately, the driver of the Colorado, a 49-year-old man from Salinas, was declared dead at the scene. The passenger of the Colorado sustained injuries and was transported to Natividad Medical Center for medical attention.
The collision initiated a chain reaction, leading to additional crashes involving three other vehicles. Fortunately, the driver and passenger of a white Honda Accord, as well as the driver of the white Chevrolet 2500 and the driver and passenger of a maroon Toyota Sienna, reported no injuries.
CHP has closed both southbound lanes of Highway 101 at Gloria Road while the investigation is ongoing. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office will provide further identification of the deceased driver.
