Kenansville, FL (October 19, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred on Friday, October 18, on the Florida Turnpike near mile marker 202, resulting in the death of the driver of a Chevrolet Captiva Sport. All southbound lanes have since reopened following the incident, but drivers are advised to avoid the area due to heavy traffic congestion.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the driver of the 2012 Chevrolet Captiva Sport was traveling southbound in the inside lane when a tire blowout caused the vehicle to veer off the road onto the left shoulder, where it struck the center guardrail. The impact caused the SUV to swerve back across the roadway, partially coming to rest in the outside lane and shoulder.
In a tragic turn of events, the driver exited the vehicle and was subsequently struck by a 2019 semi-truck, which was also heading south in the outside lane. Investigators reported that the front right side of the semi-truck collided with the rear left of the SUV and the driver. Following this collision, the semi-truck veered off the roadway, hit a cable barrier, and overturned onto its left side into a ditch.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but unfortunately, the driver of the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the semi-truck was not injured and remained at the scene to cooperate with authorities. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time.
