Indianapolis, IN (October 19, 2024) – A state trooper is recovering at home after being struck by a vehicle on I-465 early Saturday morning. The incident occurred around 3:14 a.m. as Indiana State Police Trooper Todd Harless was responding to a crash near the 1.5 mile marker on I-465 East, located on the south side of the city.

At the time of the accident, the highway segment was under construction, with concrete barriers blocking both shoulders. Trooper Harless parked his police vehicle in the left lane to direct traffic away from the crash site, where multiple disabled vehicles awaited towing. His police vehicle’s lights were flashing to alert oncoming traffic.

Unfortunately, a blue 2002 Honda Civic struck Harless’ vehicle from behind, pushing it into the officer. He was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation and has since been released to recover at home. The driver of the Honda remains hospitalized but is reported to be in stable condition.

Investigators believe that alcohol may have played a role in the crash, according to an Indiana State Police spokesperson.

Indiana law mandates that drivers must move over for emergency vehicles that are stopped on the side of the road. If changing lanes is not possible, drivers are required to slow down to 10 mph below the posted speed limit to ensure the safety of emergency personnel and other road users.

Our thoughts are with Trooper Harless and all those affected by this incident.

Vehicle Accidents in Indiana

Motor vehicle accidents involving emergency responders are a significant concern in Indiana, as they can lead to serious injuries and fatalities. Each year, numerous incidents occur where drivers fail to adhere to the state’s Move Over Law, which is designed to protect law enforcement and emergency personnel working on the side of the road.

The law requires drivers to change lanes when approaching a stationary emergency vehicle with its lights flashing. If it is not safe to change lanes, drivers must reduce their speed to ensure the safety of those on the scene. Failing to do so can result in severe consequences, not only for the emergency responders but also for the drivers involved in such accidents.

Being involved in a vehicle accident, especially one that affects emergency personnel, can have lasting implications. It is crucial for all drivers to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings, particularly in construction zones or areas where emergency vehicles are present.
