Nashville, TN (October 19, 2024) – A tragic pedestrian accident occurred in downtown Nashville early Friday morning, resulting in one fatality and two individuals hospitalized. At approximately 12 a.m. on October 18, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department responded to the scene near the historic Ryman Auditorium.
Reports indicate that Leroy Wienke, a 66-year-old man from Westfield, Wisconsin, was fatally struck while waiting with his family for a rideshare. The accident unfolded when the suspect, identified as 25-year-old John Williams, was driving a 2017 Mercedes C30 at a high rate of speed. In an attempt to avoid a stopped vehicle, Williams swerved, causing the Mercedes to travel over the curb and onto the sidewalk.
The vehicle struck Wienke, his wife, brother-in-law, and sister-in-law, who were all standing on the sidewalk. Following the impact, the Mercedes swerved back towards the roadway and collided with a parked Ford Explorer before coming to a stop in the middle of Commerce Street.
Wienke was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. His wife and sister-in-law were also hospitalized but reported to have non-life-threatening injuries. Additionally, a passenger in the suspect’s vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries as well.
According to police, officers detected a strong odor of alcohol when speaking to Williams, who exhibited signs of impairment, including slurred speech, red, bloodshot, watery eyes, and unsteadiness on his feet. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
