Nashville, TN (September 17, 2024) – A tragic pedestrian accident occurred late Thursday night in downtown Nashville, resulting in one fatality and several injuries. At approximately 11:45 p.m., the Metro Nashville Police Department responded to reports of a crash at the intersection of Commerce Street and 4th Avenue North. Upon arrival, officers discovered multiple individuals injured on the sidewalk.
Preliminary investigations revealed that a vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed down Commerce Street when it veered onto the sidewalk, striking a group of pedestrians. Among those injured was Leroy Wienke, who was hit and fell, suffering a severe head injury after striking the concrete. Emergency responders transported Wienke to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries.
Wienke’s family members, including his wife, brother-in-law, and sister-in-law, were also struck by the vehicle. They received immediate medical attention at the scene before being taken to Vanderbilt for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the vehicle, identified as 25-year-old John Williams, remained at the scene alongside three passengers. One of the passengers sustained injuries and was also transported to Vanderbilt. Officers noted that Williams exhibited signs of intoxication, including bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and an inability to walk unaided to the patrol car.
A search of the vehicle uncovered multiple bottles of alcoholic beverages, including Reposado tequila, and a strong odor of marijuana was detected inside the car. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident is ongoing.
Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Leroy Wienke during this incredibly difficult time.
