Ozark, MO (October 18, 2024) – A serious traffic accident occurred on October 17, 2024, at approximately 12:35 PM on Highway 5, eleven miles north of Gainesville. The incident prompted a swift response from local law enforcement and emergency services.
Preliminary reports indicate that the collision involved two vehicles: a 2002 Buick LaSabre and a 1999 Ford Ranger. The Buick, driven by 53-year-old Sandra D. Shumate from Ava, MO, was traveling westbound on County Road 117 when it entered Highway 5, crossing into the path of the northbound Ford Ranger, driven by 56-year-old James W. Klein from Gainesville, MO. The two vehicles collided, resulting in both being declared a total loss and subsequently towed by Ron’s Recovery Service upon officer request.
Emergency responders transported Sandra Shumate to Mercy Hospital in Springfield via Air Evac for treatment of moderate injuries. James Klein, who was wearing a safety device at the time of the accident, sustained minor injuries and was taken to Baxter Regional Medical Center by Ozark County Ambulance.
