Kansas City, MO (October 15, 2024) – An apartment fire early Tuesday morning resulted in the rescue of five individuals from a four-story brick building located off Gladstone Boulevard. Emergency crews responded to the scene just after 5:30 a.m. at the intersection of Gladstone Boulevard and North Mersington Avenue.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered flames on the first floor of the apartment complex. Acting quickly, they utilized ladders to rescue five residents who were trapped in their units on the second and third floors. Fortunately, all five individuals were successfully brought to safety.
Four of the rescued residents were transported to area hospitals for evaluation due to smoke inhalation. As of now, all are reported to be in stable condition. Additionally, the Red Cross has been called in to assist 13 adults and three children who were displaced by the fire. Thankfully, no other injuries were reported.
Although the fire was contained to a single apartment, significant smoke damage was evident throughout the building. The Kansas City Fire Department (KCFD) has determined that the fire was accidental in nature, originating from an electric baseboard heater. However, due to the extent of the damage, investigators have not yet been able to ascertain whether the cause was an electrical failure in the heater or if radiant heat ignited flammable materials nearby.
Our thoughts are with those affected by this incident, and we commend the quick actions of the firefighters and emergency responders who ensured the safety of the residents.
