Effingham County, IL (October 15, 2024) – A serious commercial vehicle crash occurred on I-70 eastbound in Effingham County, leading to significant traffic disruptions on Monday evening. The incident took place around 4:20 p.m. near milepost 101, prompting a swift response from state troopers and emergency services.
Preliminary reports indicate that the crash involved two semi-trucks. The first vehicle, a Peterbilt semi-truck, was traveling east behind a second vehicle, a Freightliner semi-truck. The Freightliner was slowing down to a stop due to traffic ahead when the Peterbilt failed to stop in time, resulting in a collision with the trailer being hauled by the Freightliner.
As a result of the crash, the passenger of the Peterbilt was flown to a regional hospital with serious injuries. Fortunately, the driver and passenger of the Freightliner, as well as the driver of the Peterbilt, reported no injuries at the scene.
Traffic on I-70 was shut down for over three hours as officials worked to clear the wreckage and ensure the safety of all involved. All lanes were reopened around 8 p.m. following the completion of the cleanup efforts.
The driver of the Peterbilt has been cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and for following too closely. State Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
