Indianapolis, IN (October 14, 2024) – A tragic incident occurred on Sunday afternoon at the Crestwood Village Apartments located in the 8800 block of South Madison Avenue. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene following reports of a fire, which was later determined to be small and contained to one unit’s living room.

According to officials with the Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD), crews received the call around 12:46 p.m. and arrived on the scene shortly thereafter, at approximately 12:53 p.m. Upon arrival, firefighters noted that there were no visible flames coming from the building.

As the investigation unfolded, it was revealed that one of the building’s managers had forced entry into the apartment after hearing a smoke alarm activate. The manager called out to the resident but received no response. Upon entering the unit, she discovered a 67-year-old male who was unresponsive.

With the assistance of another apartment complex employee, the manager utilized a small extinguisher to extinguish the fire. Fortunately, the fire was contained and did not affect any other residents or apartments in the complex.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office later determined that the victim did not die as a result of the fire itself, but rather from an acute medical emergency. Investigators believe that the fire was caused by improper use of smoking materials that ignited “available combustibles” after the man suffered his medical emergency.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends affected by this unfortunate incident.

Apartment Fires in Indiana

Apartment fires can pose significant risks to residents and property. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), nearly 25% of all reported fires occur in residential buildings, with smoking materials being a leading cause of these incidents. The aftermath of such fires can be devastating, leading to loss of life, injuries, and extensive property damage.

In Indiana, the consequences of apartment fires can be particularly severe due to the close proximity of units. When a fire breaks out, it can quickly spread to neighboring apartments, putting multiple families at risk. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety measures, including the proper use of smoking materials and the necessity of functioning smoke alarms.

Residents are encouraged to take proactive steps to ensure their safety, including:

  • Regularly checking and maintaining smoke alarms.
  • Ensuring that smoking materials are properly extinguished and stored away from combustibles.
  • Creating and practicing an escape plan in case of a fire.

In the wake of such incidents, it is crucial for victims and their families to understand their rights and the potential for recovery. If you or someone you know has been affected by a fire, it may be beneficial to consult with a legal professional who can provide guidance on navigating the aftermath and any potential claims for damages.
