Caldwell County, NC (October 14, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred on Saturday, October 12, at approximately 3:10 p.m. on Hickory Nut Ridge Road near Baton Church Road, resulting in the death of a man and critical injuries to his wife. Emergency responders from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol were dispatched to the scene following reports of the incident.
Preliminary investigations indicate that a golf cart was attempting to turn left from a private driveway when it entered the path of a 2018 Chevy Malibu traveling eastbound. The collision resulted in severe consequences for the occupants of the golf cart. The driver, 58-year-old Roy Shane Epps, was transported to a local hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. His wife, 57-year-old Julie Safford Epps, was also taken to a medical center, where she is reported to be in critical condition.
The driver of the Chevy Malibu, identified as 33-year-old Cody Lyndon Pennell, was unharmed in the crash. However, he has been charged with driving while impaired, with additional charges anticipated as the investigation continues. The roadway was closed for approximately one hour to facilitate the on-scene investigation.
