Oakley, CA (October 14, 2024) – A serious incident unfolded Saturday evening involving a stolen vehicle, resulting in injuries to an Oakley police sergeant and the arrest of the suspect, 29-year-old Devon Singleton. The collision occurred around 6:10 p.m. on East Cypress Road while officers were actively searching for the stolen car.
According to the Oakley Police Department, officers initially spotted the stolen vehicle speeding down Jersey Island Road. In an effort to bring the situation under control, they deployed spike strips to slow the car. However, the suspect continued to drive at high speeds, despite the deflating tires.
As the situation escalated, two officers, including the sergeant, were stationed at the intersection of East Cypress Road and Knightsen Avenue, near the Valero gas station. Concerned for the safety of patrons at the gas station, the sergeant positioned himself strategically between the gas station and the path of the erratically driving vehicle.
Moments later, the suspect collided head-on with the sergeant’s patrol car. Authorities reported that the sergeant was momentarily trapped inside his vehicle but managed to exit and apprehend Singleton. The sergeant was subsequently hospitalized for his injuries but was released a few hours later.
Additionally, an adult female passenger in Singleton’s vehicle sustained injuries and was also taken to a local hospital for treatment. Singleton was airlifted to a hospital for further medical care but was later released. He faces multiple charges, including assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, possession of a stolen vehicle, and felony evading.
Our thoughts are with the injured sergeant and all those affected by this incident.
