Tampa, FL (October 11, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred on October 10, at the intersection of Florida Avenue and Palm Avenue, resulting in the death of a woman and serious injuries to another. The incident took place around 10:15 p.m. when officers from the Tampa Police Department responded to reports of a collision.
Upon arrival, officers discovered that a 2005 Nissan Sentra had collided with a 2022 Hyundai Tucson, impacting the passenger side of the Hyundai. The 55-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the Hyundai, sustained severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The 35-year-old driver of the Hyundai also suffered serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he is expected to survive. Fortunately, the 58-year-old driver of the Nissan was not injured in the crash.
Authorities noted that widespread power outages due to Hurricane Milton left the intersection dark, with traffic lights not functioning. Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw expressed deep sadness over the incident and emphasized the need for drivers to exercise caution in the hurricane-affected area.
“This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of traveling safely, especially in the aftermath of Hurricane Milton. All drivers are urged to be extra cautious, especially at intersections, and to treat non-functioning traffic signals as four-way stops,” Chief Bercaw stated in a release. “Let’s work together to prevent such tragedies in the future.”
The Tampa Police Department is urging all motorists to remain vigilant and prioritize safety while navigating intersections, particularly in areas experiencing power outages.
