Detroit Lakes, MN (October 10, 2024) – A tragic vehicle accident occurred on October 8, 2024, resulting in two fatalities. At approximately 1:47 p.m., emergency responders were alerted to a collision involving three vehicles on Highway 59 at mile marker 269 in Detroit Township, Becker County.
According to authorities, a 1996 Toyota Corolla and a 2003 Ford Econoline were traveling northbound on Highway 59, while a 2015 Chrysler Town and Country was heading southbound. The sequence of events leading to the crash is currently under investigation. Reports indicate that the road conditions were dry at the time of the incident.
Emergency personnel pronounced both occupants of the Toyota Corolla dead at the scene. The driver, identified as 33-year-old Cole Michael Carlson from Detroit Lakes, and his passenger, 60-year-old Stacey Marlyn Nelson from Hawley, were both unbelted at the time of the crash. The investigation revealed that neither occupant was wearing a seat belt, which may have contributed to the fatal outcome.
The driver of the Ford Econoline, 59-year-old Evette Elana Fox from Bagley, sustained no injuries and was wearing a seat belt. The occupants of the Chrysler Town and Country, 84-year-old Marvin Leroy St Germain and 82-year-old Marie Annette St Germain, both from Fosston, were transported to Essentia ER with non-life-threatening injuries. Both were also wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.
The Becker County Sheriff’s Office, St. Mary’s EMS, and Detroit Lakes Fire Department responded to the scene. The investigation into the crash remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the exact circumstances that led to this tragic event.
