Chouteau County, MT (October 10, 2024) – A tragic two-vehicle crash occurred on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, resulting in the death of a 16-year-old boy. The accident took place at approximately 8:50 a.m. at mile marker 58 of US Highway 87, several miles north of Loma.
According to the Montana Highway Patrol (MHP), the teen was driving a Chevy pickup truck east on Briese Road when he failed to stop at a stop sign. The pickup truck then entered US Highway 87, colliding with a second vehicle. The impact caused the trailer of the second vehicle to roll off the east side of the road, while the Chevy spun clockwise one-quarter turn.
The force of the crash was devastating, tearing the cab of the pickup truck away from the vehicle and resulting in the teen being thrown from the truck. MHP officials reported that he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. The driver of the second vehicle, a 46-year-old man, was wearing a seatbelt and fortunately did not sustain any injuries.
The MHP crash report indicated that factors such as alcohol, drugs, or speed were not involved in the collision. Emergency crews arrived at the scene shortly after the crash was reported to the MHP at around 9 a.m. All lanes on US Highway 87 were closed as crews worked to clear the area, and traffic was being diverted along a dirt road.
