Dodge County, WI (October 10, 2024) – A tragic crash occurred on Sunday afternoon, October 6 that resulted in the death of an 87-year-old man and left another individual facing serious legal consequences. The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office reported that the incident took place around 4:10 p.m. at the intersection of County Road I and County Road GI in the Town of Lowell.
According to witnesses, a Chevrolet Silverado truck was traveling north on Baker Road when it approached the stop sign at County Road GI. The sheriff’s office indicated that the driver failed to stop for the sign, leading to a loss of control. The vehicle subsequently spun out, struck the ditch, and overturned multiple times before coming to rest in the ditch near County Road I.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrived on the scene to assess the situation. The driver, identified as 56-year-old Gregory Moritz from rural Reeseville, was treated by EMS and subsequently arrested for his sixth offense of operating while intoxicated (OWI).
Tragically, an 87-year-old male passenger, identified as Ralph Finkler, also from rural Reeseville, was transported by UW Med Flight to UW Madison, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The sheriff’s office has charged Moritz with homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle in connection with the crash. It was noted that neither occupant in the truck was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. Alcohol and speed were cited as contributing factors in the incident, which remains under investigation.
