According to Southfield Police Chief Elvin Barren, the patrol car was approaching the intersection when a vehicle driven by a 16-year-old girl made a left turn onto 12 Mile from Marimoor Drive, colliding with the police vehicle. The impact caused the patrol car to crash into another vehicle, which was being driven by a 58-year-old woman from Wixom, who was traveling east on 12 Mile Road at the time.
During a press conference held on October 8, Southfield police shared dashcam footage of the crash, providing insight into the events leading up to the collision. Chief Barren clarified that the officers were not responding to any emergency calls at the time of the incident and were traveling at a speed under 40 miles per hour in a 45-mile-per-hour zone.
