Wapakoneta, OH (October 9, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred on Interstate 75 northbound outside of Wapakoneta on the evening of October 8, resulting in the death of a Lima man. The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported that 44-year-old David Shutt was killed in the crash, which is believed to have stemmed from a possible road rage incident.
According to preliminary investigations, the incident unfolded shortly after 5 PM near Milepost 114. Twenty-four-year-old Bailey Luckett was driving her 2019 Kia Soul ahead of a semi-truck operated by 50-year-old Jesus Perez. Reports indicate that Luckett abruptly stopped her vehicle in the northbound lane, excited, and confronted Perez. In the ensuing chaos, Shutt, who was driving a 2017 Chrysler Pacifica, collided with the rear of Perez’s Freightliner Cascadia.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but unfortunately, Shutt sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the site of the accident. Both Luckett and Perez were unharmed, with Perez reportedly wearing a safety belt at the time of the incident, while Shutt was not.
The crash prompted a significant response from various agencies, including the Ohio State Highway Patrol Crash Reconstruction Unit, the Wapakoneta Fire Department, and the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not yet released further details regarding the circumstances leading to the confrontation.
Traffic in the northbound lanes of I-75 was heavily affected, with backups reported until the highway was reopened around 8:30 PM. The Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the incident, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
