Deshler, OH (October 8, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred Monday afternoon when a man lost his life after running a stop sign and colliding with a tanker truck. The incident took place around 3:45 p.m. on Range Line Road at the intersection with U.S. 6.
According to the Wood County Sheriff’s Office, Jacob Kern, 31, was traveling southbound on Range Line Road when he failed to stop for the stop sign at U.S. 6. As a result, his pickup truck collided with an eastbound tanker truck driven by 44-year-old John Secord from LaSalle, Michigan. The impact was severe, causing Mr. Kern’s vehicle to become lodged underneath the tanker, which subsequently caught fire.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but unfortunately, Mr. Kern was pronounced dead at the site of the accident. Fortunately, the tanker, which was transporting ethanol, did not sustain a significant rupture or leak, and its contents remained intact despite the fire.
The Wood County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Jacob Kern during this difficult time.

Factors contributing to truck accidents can include:
- Failure to Obey Traffic Signals: As seen in this incident, running stop signs can lead to catastrophic outcomes.
