Auburn, ME (October 8, 2024) – A serious head-on collision occurred on Route 4 in Auburn on Monday morning,  resulting in injuries to two men. The crash took place shortly before 10:30 AM in the section of Route 4 that is also known as Turner Road, between East Waterman Road and the Auburn-Turner town line.

According to an initial investigation by Auburn police, a pickup truck traveling northbound hydroplaned and crossed the center line into the path of an oncoming SUV. The collision involved the pickup truck and a southbound SUV, leading to significant damage and serious injuries.

The driver of the SUV, identified as 78-year-old James Halliday of Auburn, was transported to Central Maine Medical Center before being transferred to Maine Medical Center. As of Monday afternoon, Halliday was reported to be in critical condition.

The driver of the pickup truck, 36-year-old Albert Deschaine of Peru, Maine, was thrown from the vehicle upon impact. He was also taken to Central Maine Medical Center, where he is being treated for serious injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

Authorities closed Route 4 for several hours on Monday to allow for the reconstruction of the crash scene. Auburn police have stated that while speed and road conditions appear to be contributing factors in this incident, the investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been filed at this time.

The Auburn Police Department is receiving assistance from the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office as they continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
