Spofford, NH (October 7, 2024) – A four-vehicle accident occurred on Route 9 Saturday afternoon, October 5 resulting in injuries to two individuals. The crash was reported at approximately 12:45 PM, just past Howard’s Leather Store, prompting a response from local authorities, including Chesterfield police and emergency services.
According to Chesterfield Police Chief Lance Rouse, the incident began when a Hyundai Elantra, driven by 40-year-old Joseph Keating of Spofford, stopped to make a left turn onto Atherton Hill Road. The Hyundai was then rear-ended by a Toyota pickup truck, which caused it to be pushed into oncoming eastbound traffic. The Elantra subsequently collided with a Subaru and a Honda Accord before coming to a stop facing east in the westbound shoulder.
Joseph Keating sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Cheshire Medical Center for treatment. Reports indicate that his injuries included broken ribs, although further details regarding his condition were not available as of Sunday.
The driver of the Toyota pickup truck, 72-year-old Alan Emond from Gilsum, was also taken to Cheshire Medical Center, but his injuries were reported as non-life-threatening. The other drivers involved in the crash, including 75-year-old Conrad Dumas of Greenfield in the Subaru and 25-year-old Karthik Spinivas of Ballston, NY, in the Honda, were uninjured, along with the passenger in the Honda.
The Hyundai, Toyota, and Subaru were declared total losses as a result of the crash, while the Honda sustained only minor damage. Following the incident, Route 9 was closed in both directions for about an hour as authorities worked to clear the scene and reroute traffic onto Route 9A.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is ongoing, with Chesterfield police leading the inquiry. Emergency personnel from the Keene Fire Department, Spofford Fire and Rescue, Chesterfield Fire Department, and New Hampshire State Police also responded to the scene.
