Grafton, WV (October 5, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred at the Leer Mine in Taylor County on Friday, October 4, resulting in the death of a 34-year-old man from Preston County. Colton Walls, a longwall electrician from Bruceton Mills, sustained injuries while working at the mining complex and was pronounced dead later that day.
Governor Jim Justice announced the unfortunate news, expressing condolences to Walls’ family, which includes a wife and three children. The incident is currently under investigation by the West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety, and Training, along with the Mine Safety and Health Administration.
In a heartfelt statement, Governor Justice remarked, “Our miners are the backbone of West Virginia, and every loss we experience hits us to our deepest cores. The heart and soul of West Virginia are found in our coal miners, and today, we grieve the loss of one of our own. I’m told that Mr. Walls was truly dedicated, hardworking, and brave, and I know he’ll be dearly missed by many. It’s moments like these that remind us of the incredible sacrifices made by those who have the courage to be a miner. So, please hold his family and loved ones close in your hearts tonight. Cathy and I will continue to keep him and all our other miners in our prayers.”
This incident marks the second fatality at the Leer Mining Complex in 2024, following the death of 57-year-old William Joe Crandall, who died in August after being struck in the head while working underground.
Our thoughts are with the Walls family and all those affected by this tragic event.
