Charlottesville, VA (October 4, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred on Thursday evening, October 3, when a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Elliot Avenue and South First Street. The incident took place around 7:25 p.m., leading to serious injuries for the victim, who was later identified as 64-year-old Mamawa Simai of Charlottesville.
Emergency responders transported Simai to the University of Virginia Medical Center, where she unfortunately succumbed to her injuries. The driver involved in the accident, 19-year-old Matthew Christian Kozub from Louisa County, remained at the scene and reported the crash to the authorities. A witness also stayed to provide information regarding the incident.
According to the Charlottesville Police Department, Simai was using the crosswalk at the time of the accident on her way to work when she was struck by Kozub’s vehicle. He was interviewed by officers and provided a statement about the incident. During the investigation, it was revealed that Kozub was arrested at the scene on an unrelated assault warrant out of Louisa County. He is currently being held at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and evidence will be presented to the city’s Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office to determine if any charges will be filed.
