Santa Barbara, CA (October 3, 2024) – A tragic car accident occurred on Sunday evening, September 29, on Highway 1 in Lompoc, resulting in the death of an 11-year-old girl. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office Coroner’s Bureau has identified the victim as Jaylah Gonzalez, a resident of Santa Maria.
According to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, the collision took place around 5 p.m. at the intersection of State Route 1 and Santa Lucia Canyon Road. Reports indicate that Jose Alfred Gonzalez, 65, of Lompoc, was driving a Toyota Camry and had stopped at the intersection, preparing to make a left turn onto Highway 1.
At that moment, Shane Giles, 21, of Lompoc, was traveling south on Highway 1 in a Toyota Prius. As Jose Gonzalez entered the intersection to turn left, the two vehicles collided. Tragically, Jaylah, who was a passenger in the Camry, sustained severe injuries and was pronounced dead at Lompoc Valley Medical Center shortly after the accident.
In addition to Jaylah, Luz Maria Gonzalez, Jose, and Shane Giles were all hospitalized due to injuries sustained in the crash. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident.
