Muscle Shoals, AL (September 30, 2024) – A tragic incident occurred on Saturday night when a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle. The accident took place at approximately 7:35 p.m. on George Wallace Boulevard, between Patriots Drive and Sixth Street.
Responding officers discovered 25-year-old Jamya B. Shanes lying on the edge of the roadway with severe trauma. Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses reported that they were walking with Shanes when a dark-colored truck struck her and fled the scene.
Muscle Shoals police, in collaboration with Tuscumbia police, gathered a description of the vehicle and obtained a license plate number, which they traced to an address in Tuscumbia. Authorities located an Explorer Sport Trac with significant damage to the front passenger side and hood, along with what appeared to be human hair on the vehicle.
A 74-year-old man from Tuscumbia was taken into custody, and police plan to charge him with leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in death.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Ms. Shanes’ friends and family during this difficult time,” stated the Muscle Shoals police.
