Saratoga Springs, UT (September 28, 2024) – A small plane tragically crashed into Utah Lake on Friday, September 27 leaving its two occupants submerged for an extended period, according to emergency responders. The incident occurred shortly after 10 a.m. when the plane, a Cirrus SR22, fell short of the runway at Provo Airport after departing from St. George Municipal Airport earlier that day.
Utah County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Spencer Cannon reported that by 9 p.m., the bodies of the two occupants had been recovered from the crash site. They were identified as Michael Hyrum Cox, 43, of St. George, and Mark Andrew Johnson, 46, of Washington. The plane had submerged in approximately 8½ feet of water for several hours, complicating recovery efforts.
Saratoga Springs Fire Chief Jess Campbell indicated that a significant rescue operation was underway by 5 p.m., with Provo firefighters recovering a large portion of the submerged aircraft. Despite their efforts, the engine of the plane remains lodged several feet deep in the lake, and debris from the aircraft was also retrieved from the water.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has initiated an investigation into the crash, as details surrounding the incident remain unclear. The Cirrus SR22 is a single-engine composite aircraft typically designed to seat four to five occupants.
