Cutler, CA (September 29, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred early Friday morning on Highway 63 near Avenue 392, resulting in the death of 50-year-old Marin Apodaca of Cutler. Family members report that Apodaca was attempting to assist someone involved in a prior crash when he was struck by a passing vehicle.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the initial collision happened just before 6 a.m. when a truck traveling southbound on Highway 63 stopped to make a left turn and was rear-ended by another car. Apodaca stopped to help clear debris from the roadway and was subsequently hit by a 2016 Toyota that did not see him in time. He died at the scene despite efforts by emergency responders.
Witnesses confirmed that Apodaca was on his way to work with his wife when he noticed the debris on the highway and chose to stop and help. The driver of the Toyota remained at the scene and attempted to administer CPR until paramedics arrived. Officer Baker of the CHP stated that drugs and alcohol do not appear to have been factors in the accident.
Paramedics performed CPR on Apodaca for approximately 15 minutes, but unfortunately, he could not be revived. One individual from the initial crash sustained minor injuries and was hospitalized for cuts to the head but is expected to recover.
Highway 63 was closed between Avenue 388 and Road 128 for the investigation, reopening shortly before 8 a.m.
Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Marin Apodaca during this incredibly difficult time.
