Vian, OK (September 27, 2024) – A Sequoyah County deputy was seriously injured on Thursday overnight, September 26 while directing traffic on Interstate 40. The incident occurred near the Vian exit as Deputy Duwaine Chase was assisting the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and first responders at the scene of a fatal accident.
According to Sequoyah County Sheriff Larry Lane, Deputy Chase was struck by a vehicle that also collided with his patrol unit. Fortunately, the car narrowly missed hitting a fire truck and firefighters who were present on the scene, highlighting the dangers first responders face while working to ensure public safety.
Deputy Chase was airlifted to a hospital in Little Rock for treatment of serious injuries. As of now, his condition remains unknown. Sheriff Lane noted that Deputy Chase has served with the Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Office for approximately three years.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is currently investigating the incident. Sheriff Lane confirmed that the driver involved in the accident has not been arrested at this time.
