Amherst Township, OH (September 27, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred on Thursday night when a Lake County woman drove her vehicle in the wrong direction on the Ohio Turnpike, resulting in a head-on collision with an oncoming tractor-trailer. The incident took place just before 9 p.m. near milepost 142 in Lorain County.
According to the State Highway Patrol, 78-year-old Rita Robinson Whitman from Willoughby was driving a 2015 Toyota RAV4 westbound in the eastbound lanes of the turnpike when she collided with a 2021 International tractor-trailer. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, Whitman was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, a 33-year-old woman from McComb, Ohio, sustained minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to UH Elyria Medical Center for treatment.
The cause of Whitman’s wrong-way driving remains unclear, and the accident is currently under investigation by the authorities.
