Washington County, UT (September 26, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred on Wednesday night, resulting in the death of a 19-year-old Utah Tech University student and leaving two others in critical condition. The incident took place around 10 p.m. just outside of Snow Canyon State Park, where a Volkswagen Jetta was traveling at a high speed when it crashed.
Reports indicate that the vehicle was moving at speeds between 70 and 100 mph on Snow Canyon Drive when the driver lost control. The car traveled approximately 300 feet into lava rock, ultimately coming to a stop at the Lava Flow trailhead parking lot. Fortunately, all three occupants were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, which may have mitigated further injuries.
The deceased has been identified as Sawyer Sherk, a 19-year-old male student at Utah Tech University, who tragically died at the scene. The two 18-year-old female passengers were airlifted to a local hospital in critical condition. It remains unclear whether they are also students at Utah Tech.
The dean of students at Utah Tech, Ali Threet, expressed the community’s sorrow, stating, “He was very dynamic, that he made friends easily, that he was always involved in the classes.” Threet noted that multiple professors had shared their admiration for Sherk’s engaging personality, highlighting how well-liked he was among peers.
A crash reconstruction team has been deployed to the scene to gather more information regarding the circumstances surrounding the accident. The investigation is ongoing, as authorities seek to understand the factors that contributed to this tragic event.
