Falkville, AL (September 26, 2024) – A serious incident occurred on Monday night when a police pickup truck crashed into the patio of a Chipotle Mexican Grill in Decatur, injuring four individuals, including an 8-year-old girl. The accident took place just before 8 p.m. as Officer Brandon Knutson of the Falkville Police Department was transporting an inmate to the Morgan County Jail.
According to Falkville City Attorney Larry Madison, Officer Knutson had stopped for a dinner break and parked his Ford F-150. After exiting the vehicle, he claims the truck malfunctioned and rolled backward, striking the young girl who was sitting on the restaurant’s patio with her family. The girl sustained serious injuries and was flown to a hospital with broken ribs.
In addition to the young girl, reports indicate that one other child and two adults were also injured in the incident and required hospitalization. The Decatur Police Department responded promptly to the scene to assist those affected and to begin an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The family of the injured girl expressed their concerns regarding the officer’s response after the incident. Heather Saavedra, the girl’s aunt, stated that instead of checking on the victims, Officer Knutson allegedly yelled at them, insisting they did not need medical treatment. She emphasized that such behavior was inappropriate, given the circumstances.
Falkville Police officials reported that the incident visibly shook Officer Knutson, and he has chosen to take some time off following the traumatic event. Madison shared that Knutson reported a warning on the truck’s dashboard prior to the crash, indicating a possible malfunction. The dashboard read, “Shift System Fault,” which is currently under investigation.
In light of this incident, the city attorney announced the implementation of a new protocol for officers driving Ford F-150 trucks. Moving forward, officers will be required to turn off their vehicles whenever they make a stop, pending further guidance from Ford regarding the vehicle’s safety.
It is important to note that many Ford F-150 trucks similar to the one involved in this incident have been recalled; however, the manager of a local Ford dealership indicated that there are currently no recalls concerning the issue of these trucks unexpectedly reversing.
Our thoughts are with the injured individuals and their families as they navigate the aftermath of this unfortunate accident.
