Fond du Lac, WI (September 24, 2024) – Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue responded to a significant house fire overnight that resulted in injuries to one individual on Monday. The incident occurred shortly after 11 PM on September 23, at 247 Packer Street.

Upon arrival, emergency personnel observed a woman hanging from a second-story window. Tragically, she fell shortly thereafter as the fire had completely engulfed the backside of the house, with smoke billowing from nearly every window. Additionally, a truck parked near the house was also reported to be on fire.

Firefighters quickly took action, bringing the fire under control within 45 minutes. Rescue crews provided immediate medical attention to the woman, who sustained burns to her hands, and transported her to SSM St. Agnes Hospital for further treatment. Fortunately, no one else was in the house at the time of the fire.

Due to the size of the fire, a Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) call was initiated, bringing assistance from neighboring fire departments, including those from Mt. Calvary, the Town of Fond du Lac, Lamartine, and North Fond du Lac.

Fire investigators from Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue, along with the Fond du Lac Police Department, will be working to determine the cause and origin of the fire. The police department also assisted with scene management and traffic control during the incident.

Our thoughts are with the injured individual and her family during this challenging time.

House Fires in Wisconsin

House fires pose a significant risk to residents in Wisconsin, with numerous incidents reported each year. According to recent statistics, fires can lead to severe injuries, fatalities, and extensive property damage, highlighting the importance of fire safety and prevention measures.

Several factors contribute to the occurrence of house fires, including:

  • Cooking Equipment: Many residential fires start in the kitchen due to unattended cooking or flammable materials near heat sources.
  • Heating Equipment: Improper use of heating devices can lead to fires, especially during the colder months.
  • Electrical Issues: Faulty wiring or overloaded circuits can ignite fires within the home.

To promote safety, it is essential for homeowners to implement fire prevention strategies, such as installing smoke detectors, having fire extinguishers on hand, and practicing safe cooking and heating habits.

Being involved in a fire incident can be traumatic and life-altering, not only for the victims but also for their families and the community. The emotional and financial toll can be overwhelming, making it crucial for victims to seek assistance and support during their recovery.
