Manteca, CA (September 23, 2024) – A tragic multi-vehicle accident occurred on Saturday afternoon, resulting in the death of an 11-month-old baby and a 26-year-old man. The California Highway Patrol reported the incident happened shortly before 1 p.m. along Highway 132, east of South River Road near Vernalis.
Preliminary investigations by CHP indicate that the driver of a Honda sedan, a 26-year-old man from Ceres, was traveling eastbound on the highway when, for reasons yet to be determined, he partially crossed over the double yellow lines. This led to a sideswipe collision with a Honda SUV. The impact caused the SUV to strike a Toyota sedan head-on.
In an attempt to avoid the unfolding crash, a fourth driver applied their brakes but was subsequently rear-ended by a fifth vehicle. The chaotic sequence of events resulted in a devastating outcome.
The 11-month-old infant, who was a passenger in the Toyota that suffered the head-on collision, was airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center. Unfortunately, the child succumbed to their injuries the following day. Details regarding the child’s gender have not been released.
In addition to the fatalities, four other individuals sustained minor injuries in the crash. The total number of occupants in each vehicle involved remains unclear at this time. The collision prompted the closure of Highway 132, which remained blocked until approximately 3:10 p.m. while emergency responders worked at the scene.
Our hearts go out to the families affected by this tragic accident, especially to the loved ones of the deceased.
