Lakeland, FL (September 23, 2024) – A tragic series of events unfolded on Sunday night, September 22, when two separate crashes occurred just 15 minutes apart, resulting in one fatality and nine injuries, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
The first crash took place shortly before 8:30 p.m. on Alturas Babson Park Cutoff Road near U.S. 27, south of Lake Wales. This incident involved four vehicles, leading to nine out of the ten individuals involved sustaining injuries. Authorities reported that two people were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, while a 13-year-old girl was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators believe that the sequence of events began when a 2010 Dodge Ram crossed over the center line, colliding with a 2019 Ford F-150 pickup and a 2013 Ford Explorer. Following this initial impact, some occupants exited their vehicles to assess the situation. Moments later, a 2017 Chevy Silverado approached the scene and struck the Ford Explorer, causing it to rotate and hit three victims. The Chevy Silverado continued its path, hitting two additional victims and dragging them for a short distance.
The road was closed for approximately six hours as emergency responders worked to clear the scene and assist the injured.
Just 15 minutes later, deputies responded to a second crash on Rockridge Road near Country Place Road, located just north of Lakeland. According to investigators, 22-year-old Jerome Cooke of Lakeland was driving a 1992 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck east on Rockridge Road when, shortly after 8:30 p.m., the vehicle left the roadway and collided with a wooden power pole. Upon arrival, first responders discovered that Cooke had tragically passed away inside the truck.
Rockridge Road was closed for about four-and-a-half hours while authorities conducted their investigation.
Both crashes remain under investigation, and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office is working to gather further details about these incidents. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragic series of events.
